Bicycle Maintenance

Whether one cycles outdoors or on a turbo trainer, bicycle maintenance is extremely important. Without the proper maintenance, a bicycle might not survive the harsh ordeals of nature. Thus, before setting out on a ride, or for a training session, one should make sure that the following are in order.

The chain of the cycle has to be free of jerky movements. Move the pedals with the hands to ensure that there are no obstructions to the chain’s movement. If there is rust, or any improper movement, oil it immediately. One must choose a lubricant depending on the surrounding environment.

Make sure that the tires are in place and in good shape. A visual inspection is necessary to ensure no tears that might damage the tires. Air pressure is also essential, as low pressure puts additional pressure on the chain and the cyclist. The tires are especially salient in case of a turbo trainer, as the rear tire is always facing friction.

In addition to the tires, ensure that the spokes and quick-release levers are proper. Any wobbles in the tires could indicate broken spokes, which one must replace immediately. If the quick-release lever is loose, the tire might come loose in the middle of the session.

Pedals are also a vital part of the maintenance regime, whether outdoor or on a turbo trainer. Check to ensure that the pedals are in place and securely attached. In addition, their movement must be smooth. If not, one should oil them with a suitable lubricant.

Thus, bicycle maintenance is not an easy task. It is rather arduous but well worth the effort. A well-maintained bicycle delivers better performance and has a longer life than bicycles that do not receive regular maintenance. Thus, for any serious cyclist, maintaining the bicycle should be a regular part of the training.
